how ‘get out’ came to life (a blog by scarlett)

Hello! My name is Scarlett Rosetta, and I recently released my debut single ‘Get Out’ onto all streaming platforms. In this blog, I want to give you all a bit of a back story for the song, how I wrote it and eventually brought it to life…

Let’s get in our time machine and travel back to 2021 when I was 16 years old. I had just started listening to artists like Bob Dylan, The Kinks, The Doors etc. and I wanted to write a folky 60s inspired tune. I remember at the time feeling quite frustrated towards someone in my life and used my songwriting as a way to express myself without directly hurting anyone’s feelings. The song came about quite quickly, and the lyrics only took a day or two. The melody has stayed roughly the same but after years of playing it live of course there have been some adaptations. I remember this song being one of the first songs I was very truly proud of as a songwriter, and I was so excited to play it live. ‘Get Out’ has since stayed in my setlist throughout all these years and I can’t imagine a Scarlett Rosetta set without it.

‘Get Out’ was one of those songs that everyone seemed to love and I would constantly be asked when I would be releasing it. To be honest, releasing music was always something I wanted to do but I was really afraid. I don’t think I’m a perfectionist as such but having gone to a music school (and now university), my life is filled with so many talented musicians who know what a good track is supposed to sound like. Of course there aren’t any rules, but I’m such an over-thinker, and I really care about what my peers think.

Eventually, I did bring the track to a producer, however choosing a producer that is right for you can take several times, it’s just like choosing a therapist! It was clear that the producer I was working with had no passion for the project, which ended up with me feeling bad for “wasting their time” and the project kind of just faded away.

I carried on playing shows with ‘Get Out’ in the set and in September 2023 I moved to Liverpool to study songwriting and performance at uni. I struggled for a bit to get my foot in the door in the Liverpool music scene. Despite my orange hair and confident persona, I’m actually quite a shy and introverted person, and find networking to be a bit of a challenge. Because of this, it took me a while to book my first gig in Liverpool. In January 2024, I booked my first gig in Liverpool at the Jacaranda. I was opening for Carleigh Mack with Lynn Dossenbach and was performing solo. I had such a fun time and was pretty happy about how my set went.

After the show, I got an Instagram message from a producer called Ciaran. He said that he really enjoyed my set and was interested in working with me on some of my tracks! Getting a message like this made me so happy, as I had never had a producer approach me before, it had always been the other way round. We met up to meet each other and talked about a plan and where to start. Ciaran seemed really passionate about what he does and the style I’m going for so for the first time I was feeling genuinely excited to work on recording a track. I’ve had releases in mind for a while now, and I knew ‘Get Out’ would be the best place to start.

We had our first studio session just before my summer holidays, and everything went so well. We managed to get so much of the song recorded and Ciaran and I had so many ideas to bring my song to life. The vocals and acoustic guitar were done quickly, but things like bass and electric guitar took a bit longer to find the perfect sound. During summer I was itching to get back to Liverpool to work on the track again. Most of the time we recorded in Ciaran’s home studio, but we did have one session at Scrapyard to record drums, piano and some extra percussion bits.

Eventually the song was DONE, and it was sounding better than I ever imagined it. It was so cool to work with a producer who understood what I was going for and genuinely had a good time recording my track. It was very good for my self-esteem!! Hehe.

For the artwork, I had a strong vision of what I wanted. In my head I pictured a hole that had been punched through a wall with vintage wallpaper (referencing a lyric in ‘Get Out’) and a photo of myself holding a protest sign that said Get Out on it. I drew up a draft and sent my idea to my mum who’s an artist. She offered to help me out with the artwork when I came home for Christmas. In the meantime, I organised a photoshoot with my good friend Lucy who is magnificent at art and design. Lucy made the Get Out sign with her bare hands and snapped some photos of me strutting the streets of Liverpool with her camera. We picked the photos we liked best, and got them printed out.

When I arrived back to Leigh-on-Sea, my hometown, my mum was able to print off some vintage wallpaper designs that I picked out and helped create the look that I wanted for the background. Once that was done, I printed off the picture of me with the sign and moved it around to find a good placement. We glued everything down and scanned it into an editing software where I put some vintage touches to it.

When I got back to Liverpool, the wonderful founder of English Teeth helped me upload my track to a distributor and together we organised a single release show. I’d like to do another blog at some point to go into more detail about organising the event, and how you guys can do it yourself – so keep your eyes peeled for this!

March 20th hit, ‘Get Out’ was uploaded onto all streaming platforms and I played the best gig of my life with my incredible band.

And there we have it folks! That’s the story on ‘Get Out’! Thank you very much for reading my first blog on the English Teeth page. Do give me a follow on instagram @scarlett_rosetta and don’t forget to stream ‘Get Out’ now!!
